At 395 sites in 35 different states, high levels scientists have found rocket fuel in tap water. The levels of the rocket fuel in tap water is high enough to interfere with thyroid function and pose developmental risks for babies and fetuses.
The Environmental Protection Agency has remarked in a document that the removal of the ingredient perchlorate would not result in a meaningful opportunity for health risk reduction for the person served by public-water systems.
Lenny Siegel, director of the Center for Public Environmental Oversight in Mountain View, California said, "This is an unconscionable decision not based upon science or law but on concern that a more stringent standard could cost the government significantly."
The Defense Department used perchlorate for decades in testing missiles and rockets, and most perchlorate contamination is the result of defense and aerospace activities.
In absence of federal action, states have acted on their own. In 2007, California adopted a drinking water standard of 6 parts per billion. Massachusetts has set a drinking water standard of 2 parts per billion. Perchlorate in the Colorado River has been measured as high as 9 parts per billion. Perchlorate pollutes much of the lower Colorado River -- the main water source for 20 million people across the Southwest -- and has forced the shutdown of hundreds (300+) of wells in California. It has also been found in lettuce and other foods.
Perchlorate is a toxic chemical used to fuel Cold War-era missiles and the rockets that put man on the moon has left a legacy of contamination across the Southwest, where it pinches the region's already tight supply of drinking water. Those originally contracted to make perchlorate are worried they may have to spend their own money in cleaning up the mess made.
